Worrying

Worrying is what keeps us up at night, stops us from reaching our full potential and ultimately robs us of our happiness.
I don’t claim to be an expert on many things but worrying is definitely one of them, or it used to be. I’m not saying I don’t worry sometimes, I still have my moments, but my life isn’t ruled by it as it once was. There are some things that I know are going to happen in the future that will be hard and painful, but worrying will do nothing to change that.
The most helpful thing to realize is that most of what we worry about never happens.
In the past year I know people who have had homes destroyed by flood or struck by lightening, have unexpectedly lost a life partner, lost a job etc.  Let’s think about this for a moment, if they had known this negative event was going to happen three months before and worried about it, they would have had three unnecessarily miserable months.  Not knowing about disasters allowed them to live their life as normal. Worrying would probably not have helped.
I am a big fan of visualization, it is a powerful tool and there is plenty of evidence that we get what we focus on. When we worry we are negatively visualizing our future.

 If you are currently worrying consider the following

Is there something you can practically do about it? e.g. if it is a health problem and you are putting off seeking medical advice, you know in your heart that finding out the truth is probably better than spending time worrying, which may in time actually make you sick or exacerbate any condition.
Talk to someone. Keeping it to yourself can make the problem seem much worse. Another eye on the issue may put it in perspective.
Don’t allow yourself to believe the situation is impossible, it rarely is and there is usually another way out that you have not considered.
Even if what you are worrying about happens, it probably won’t be as bad as you think.
Consider talking to a professional.  A few years ago I saw a therapist, I only needed a few sessions to get what seemed like an impossible situation into perspective.

Invest time in your friends and family
Smile, it tricks your mind into believing you are happy
